Lab Managers Meeting 6/7/2012
Gail and I (Brandon Hartman) attended the lab managers meeting this past Thursday to showcase our energy and water savings programs as well as inform them about our Living Green Labs assessments. Approximately 8 lab managers were on site, and were very receptive to hearing about Living Green at UCSF and what we are up to.  They were very excited about the refrigerator rebate program and informed us that there is quite a bit of ancient equipment used in the labs and similar programs would be a great idea. They were also interested in the pipette washing racks however most labs are now using disposable pipettes; so we plan to seek out the pipette washing systems on campus and offer pipette washing racks to them, as well as researching recyclable pipettes and adequate systems to make sure all non-biohazard pipettes are properly recycled. Overall the meeting was a great success and we look forward to working closely with the lab managers in the future to further our positive impact on UCSF.

The UCSF green Campus Team met with Julianne Richter to discuss and review the Pipette Washing Rack Rebate Program.  The meeting went fantastic, we obtained information on current methods using Nalgene pipette washer-rinsers that are left on for an average of 3 days using over 4,550 gallons per washing cycle of pipettes. The racks that we hope to implement will fit into the Steris Reliance 400 washing system already installed, and use a total of 31 gallons per wash cycle. There is an enormous amount of water savings potential here and we look forward to implementing this program in the future!

UCSF Green Campus Team is currently working on a “Pipette Washing Rack Rebate Program.” Conventional methods of pipette washing usually involve large amounts of water, and take significant time to complete the process. The Green Campus Team is currently researching new methods and systems that will save water and time in laboratories.
